Hardanger Fiddle
We love the rich history and ethereal sound of the Hardanger Fiddle (hardingfele), the national instrument of Norway.
For this latest model, Dev was inspired by the earliest hardangers like the Jåstad fiddle, built in 1651 by Ole Jonsen Jaastad. Prior to the 19th century, hardangers were smaller, narrower, and less curvy compared to a traditional violin. Many contemporary makers follow the more recent tradition of the Helland-Steintjønndalen family in building instruments with the size and shape of ordinary violins.
Dev appreciates the spirit of creativity and exploration that runs through the Hardanger tradition, and has created this particular model to explore the sound of the original body size with his own take on a narrow yet graceful shape and undercut f holes.
Dev uses Wittner geared pegs on all his hardangers to cut down on fine-tuning angst, and also follows the intuitive peg order that Salve Håkedal uses:
