Pochette Hardanger
A 'pocket-sized' and travel-friendly version of a hardanger fiddle! This unique instrument was inspired by our time spent at Folklore Village in Wisconsin, attending the 2025 HFAA (Hardanger Fiddle Association of America) workshop.
'Pochette' is the French word for pocket, and pocket fiddles were commonly used by dancing masters and traveling musicians for many centuries, dating back to the 1500s.
This pocket hardanger, with a typical hardanger scale length, carries a sound that is surprisingly full for how petite the body is, aided by the four sympathetic understrings.
Besides being a curiosity piece for those intrigued by the intersection of Baroque and Norwegian influences, the pochette hardanger would be handy for a player who seeks a designated travel instrument. But, this is especially an instrument for anyone who wants a hardanger they can easily stow in their backpack to play in the mountains and woods for the elves and fairies.
